Honestly I disliked this part of the story too, it feels like the deliberate pacing of their growth has been thrown under the bus. If anything the redeeming quality of this arc is that Ma Hongjun has gotten pretty serious.

The ring he received from XW is special and doesnt come with a level requirement because she sacrificed herself willingly for him.

Spoiler: When he reaches lvl 70 on the island he will try to get a red ring (as he reasons it's a rare opportunity to do so) and he will succeed but the process almost kills him - normally only lvl 90 soul masters can try to absorb a red ring.
